International Recognition of Energy Conservation Efforts by Lighting Project in Pakistan

National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority

UNEP Project 5799-Pakistan.

Pakistan signed the United Nations Framework on Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) on 22nd April 2016 to address the threat of global climate change alongside the rest of the world. Realizing the importance and urgency of the need to stem the pace of the global climate change, Pakistan, with the financial assistance of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) launched an ambitious project jointly implemented by National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This project was titled “Delivering the Transition to Energy Efficient Lighting in Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Outdoor Sectors in Pakistan.”

The objective of the Project was to usher in a new era by encouraging, promoting and ensuring the use of energy efficient electrical appliances in all facets of life to ease-off the load on the national grid for causing reduction in the burning of fossil fuels, which is a major source of energy production and addition of Green House Gases to the atmosphere. The foremost product identified was making the transition in Lighting, which typically consumes approximately 15% of the total produced electricity.

This was a very challenging task given the massive scale of lighting products’ usage. However, it was relatively easier to introduce lighting products, which were compliant to the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), however, it was an uphill task to monitor to check and verify that these were actually compliant. For this purpose, it was essential to equip the staff with proper knowledge about testing methods and machines in the few laboratories set up in the country.

Thus the lab staff from the various lab facilities were invited to attend this training programme in Electrical and Electronics Institute, Thailand from 8th August 2022 through 11th August 2022. This was an extremely useful visit, acknowledging which, United for Efficiency (U4E) that works to help countries implement an integrated policy approach to enable a sustainable and cost-effective transformation to energy-efficient lighting acknowledged and printed in one of its publications.

This publication is a recognition of the efforts that NEECA has put in for the sake of energy conservation and global climate change mitigation.
