Regular Check-Ups Keep the System Healthy

A car runs less efficiently the longer it goes without a service. Power plants and networks are no different, they lose performance quietly over time, unless someone is checking.

What NEECA Does

Supports bi-annual heat rate assessments of GENCOs and IPPs, so power plants are tested against the efficiency they were originally designed for.

Encourages basic and regular load profiling for electricity and gas consumers, across household, commercial, industrial and agriculture use, to see exactly where energy is going.

Works with the Ministry of Energy and NEPRA to develop clear regulations and Operations & Maintenance manuals, making testing standard practice rather than a one-off exercise.

Helps build the efficiency testing market itself, including the certification of energy service companies (ESCOs) to carry out high-level technical work.

Why It Matters

Around 61% of Pakistan's installed generation capacity comes from thermal power plants, many of them ageing. Bringing them back closer to their designed efficiency could save an estimated 0.26 MTOE of fuel and around 1.5 MTCO₂ in emissions every year, worth about USD 610 million.
